Haiyan Zhu's design for the Shangri-la Hotel in Shougang Park is a testament to the designer's ability to blend tradition with innovation. The design draws inspiration from Shangri-La's world-renowned garden scenery and Asian cultural atmosphere, while also preserving the original architectural features of the factory where the hotel is located. This fusion of old and new is a unique characteristic of Zhu's design, setting it apart from other hotel designs.
Located at the heart of Shougang Park, the Shangri-la Hotel was formerly a power generation plant that supplied energy for steel production. The hotel, with a total construction area of 63,600 square meters and 283 guest rooms, is a testament to the transformative power of design. The lighting of the hotel's indoor and outdoor spaces uses LED light sources, with the lighting scene changing with time. Warm color temperature lighting is used to create a comfortable environment for the hotel space.
The hotel's lighting design is not only innovative but also interactive. The facade of the building uses a 3000k color temperature LED, allowing the hotel to blend seamlessly with other buildings in the park at night. The interior light transmits well at night, enhancing the facade light effect. The lighting design also takes into consideration the greenery within the hotel, using sunlike lights to ensure that plants without direct sunlight can still thrive.
One of the standout features of the hotel is the 20-meter-high art installation "Journey of Hope" by Japanese studio - Studio Sawade Design. The installation, inspired by migrating birds, is illuminated by four groups of 6w narrow beam LED underwater lights, emphasizing the shape of the birds. Small floodlights added at the grille on the first floor allow viewers to appreciate the installation from various angles.
The design process was not without challenges. The lobby, with a height of more than 20 meters, required the creation of an indoor light effect that appears transparent from the outside at night. This was achieved by installing high-power linear uplights on the concrete platform close to the glass wall and uplights on the column bases, giving each structural column a rhythmic appearance. The lighting of the spiral staircase was another challenge, overcome by hiding the light strip in the stair handrail and casting light on the bottom of the stairs to form a reflection in the water, enhancing the three-dimensional extension of the stairs.
The Shangri-la Shougang Park design was completed in December 2021 in Beijing. The design's excellence was recognized when it was awarded Silver in the A' Architectural Lighting Design Award in 2023. This award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation. The Shangri-la Shougang Park design certainly fits this description, showcasing a remarkable level of excellence and introducing positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
